The rise of Camilla and her clan
By Patricia Treble | 6 April 2011 | From Macleans
“Kate’s a lovely girl,” gushed her future mother-in-law last week in London. “We’re very lucky.” Surprisingly, it is Camilla, duchess of Cornwall, 63, who has become the closest royal adviser and mentor as Kate Middleton, 29, navigates the treacherous route from commoner to future queen, a path Camilla Parker Bowles traversed mostly solo when she married Prince Charles in 2005.

I’ve written in this space about the “Throne Up” royal wedding barf bags and the commemorative royal mug with the picture of Kate and her betrothed – errrr – Prince Harry on the side. In a desperate attempt to cash in on the wedding of this century, royal opportunists from London to Hong Kong are flogging fine collectibles. It seems, however, these trinkets are being hustled from within the proverbial palace walls as well.

Charles Pachter is a painter, designer, sculptor and historian, whose work has been shown in the AGO and McMichael gallery, among others. His iconic image of the Queen riding the moose earned him the status of Canada’s Andy Warhol—a pop artist for the North.

The royal wedding bachelor party is on!
26 February 2011 | From Chatelaine
They take their bachelor parties very seriously here in England. To be accurate, that’s not even what they call them. Here, it’s a “stag do” for the boys and a “hen night” for the girls.

Poor Fergie. If the public humiliation of drunkenly trying to sell your ex-husband’s influence to an undercover News of the World reporter dressed up as a sheik isn’t enough, what about being shut out of the most important social event of the decade?

The Daily Mirror, one of London’s more entertaining tabloids, recently reported that the Palace has issued a corporate dictum literally begging UK companies to stop sending free samples of everything from linens and decorations to footwear and fashion accessories in the hope of having their product incorporated into the royal wedding plans.

The Palace has disallowed production of official Will and Kate tea towels as part of the royal wedding paraphernalia, on the grounds that they’re too disposable and kitschy. This saddens and slightly offends me, since I collect souvenir tea towels (the tackier the better) and am, by extension, a great fan of kitsch.

Prince William and Kate Middleton used the less-than-glamorous fax machine to send out their first round of save-the-dates for their spring wedding. While fancier invitations are sure to follow, European royals invited to the ceremony have just received word via fax to keep April 29 free.Tradition dictates that royal guests be notified before other high-profile attendees, and faxes are supposedly the most efficient way to do so.Greece’s former king as well as royals from Romania and Serbia have already confirmed their [...]
